Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Camp

The Colorectal Cancer Research Foundation organized its first camp on 15th January 2012 on “Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Camp ”.

The camp started at 9:00 am and continued till 2:30 pm. It was a very well attended camp. A total of 31 patients attended the camp. It included a mix of young to old patients from all strata of the society. It also attracted a lot of patients from far of places like Roorkee, Patiala, Faridadad, and Noida in addition to various areas of Delhi. A lot of our old patients who had undergone treatment from us for colorectal diseases had alsoattended the camp along with their family members.

After registration ( which was free of cost ) and completion of the performa, the clinical examination was done by Dr. Deepak Govil and Dr. Saket Goel , both Senior Consultants , Surgical Gastroenterology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. They talked to individual patients about the need for screening for this cancer and the preventive aspects of colorectal cancer. All the patients underwent CBC and Stool for occult blood examination. Few high risk patients also underwent Serum CEA and Ultrasound examination (All the tests were free of cost for the patients ; the cost was borne by the Foundation).

Dr. Mittal, who is a member of the foundation volunteered to discuss about lifestyle changes which one must incorporate in ones life to lead a disease free productive life. Dietician was also present to discuss about what diet one must take to prevent any cancer especially colorectal cancer which was well appreciated by our patients. Dr. Preetpal Singh Jolly, Dr. Subhash Mishra and Dr. Paras helped in smooth running of the camp by helping the patients to fill the performa, directing them to the concerned room and getting the tests done. Dr. Indranil, Radiologist at Apollo Clinic performed ultrasound in indicated patients.

Mr. Gaurav and Mr. Ankit ( Ethicon division of Johnson and Johnson) and Mr. Sony ( Coloplast) gave us required corporate support for our camp.

In addition, all the staff at Apollo Clinic especially Mr. Kewal and Sanjay did their best to make this camp a great success.
